Warm and cool coloured walls

Posted on 04/06/201804/06/2018

Happy Monday!

Interesting weekend for me. I went to an open house that was a newly built duplex. The layout felt a little awkward, but it was the colour scheme that stood out for me. It was predominantly grey with darkish brown tiles in the bathrooms. The bathrooms were average size, and using darker toned tiles made it look and feel smaller.

Some greys have warm tones and some are cold. This house had cold grey tones. Walking in it didn’t feel inviting, more unfriendly, and walking down the halls felt like walking on a cloudy day. Colours affect us subtly and we may not realise it. Choosing colours for your home or a development you need to think how a buyer would feel surrounded by that colour. If it’s grey like a cloudy day, do you feel happy and optimistic? Or does your energy feel low? We usually feel better on a bright sunny day. A home is somewhere you want your energy to feel light and good, it’s a space to feel safe, comfortable and relaxed in.

Here’s a comparison. Yes, the grey room on can look elegant and the yellow cushions give it some warmth. Overall, it has a cold, sterile feeling, almost wanting to keep you out, it’s a room to see and not use. The second image, is a warm toned room, nice warm neutral colours that invite you in, feels like a warm blanket surrounding you. Have a look at each one separately. Can you feel the difference?

When you choose colours, you need to imagine how they would “feel” around you. You need to live with these colours. Also important if you’re selling your home. The right colours will make potential buyers feel good about the house and want to live in it.

A friend of mine lived in a home with dark coloured floorboards, and every time she went home she didn’t feel right and at couldn’t place the feeling. She decided to change the floorboards to a lighter colour, and that was the answer. She felt happy to come home. It would also make her home feel bigger using lighter colours.

When you’re redecorating or designing your home, really think about the colours you choose and how they make you feel.
